What is Brand Identity & How To Figure Out Yours

When you think of the words Brand Identity what do you think of?

Your logo? Something else?

As a Brand Strategist I often find that people use the terms "brand" and "logo" interchangeably, but they're not the same thing.

I will say, a logo is part of your brand, BUT it is not the only piece of the puzzle. When you’re creating your entire visual brand identity, there is so much more to think about than a logo.

SO, WHAT IS BRAND IDENTITY?

I want you know that your brand is all about perception. Your brand should leave a long-lasting impression on your audience. Brand identity helps mold and form that impression.

Brand identity is the personality of your business and "the visible elements of a brand, such as color, design, and logo, that identify and distinguish the brand in customer's minds", and yes...it's a part of your brand strategy. It helps visually and mentally communicate your brand strategy to your audience.

WHAT COMES FIRST?

Brand Strategy is the first step in building your brand identity. Those who skip this, often find themselves revamping and rebranding their business.

WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF BRAND IDENTITY?

Brand identity is made up of two major parts: your visual identity (i.e., logo, color palette, typography style, photography style, graphic elements) and verbal identity (i.e., language, tone, manner, voice).

People typically see your visual branding first and this is the first impression.

After visual branding, customers are paying attention to you verbal brand identity. This is how your customers connect with your brand on a deeper level...through emotion.

A great brand cohesively ties all of these components together.

If you want your brand to be memorable, you need a solid brand identity and strategy.
